How do we mitigate our environmental impact, given our love of AI?

We are committed to sustainable practices and reducing our environmental footprint, especially regarding our love of AI technology. We recognize that large-scale AI models and computations can significantly impact energy usage and carbon.

As part of our critical AI literacy efforts, we take the following approaches to minimize unnecessary computation and associated environmental impacts. We also encourage our users to adopt these sustainable practices:

  • Avoid uploading large files in their entirety. Instead, copy and paste only the relevant portions of files to reduce computational load.

  • Be aware of token input to reduce the computational overhead required to process queries.

  • Educate yourself on best practices for sustainable AI development and usage.

By implementing these measures ourselves and empowering our users with knowledge and tools, we strive to minimize the environmental toll of AI while still enabling powerful applications. Collective efforts towards conscientious AI practices can drive innovation sustainably.

While certain use cases may require processing complete files, raising awareness about environmental impacts is vital. It is our responsibility not only to enforce sustainable policies but also to educate people about minimizing the ecological toll of AI. We plan to introduce improved resource management capabilities for file uploads in our upcoming tech releases. However, until then, our current policy limiting large file uploads remains in effect.
